72 Ounce Solid Gold Nugget discovered at McDame Creek

72 Ounce Solid Gold Nugget discovered at McDame Creek
( good heading eh?) Henry McDame discovered this gold bearing creek in 1874. In 1877 a 72 Ounce Nugget was discovered roughly where the 1st North Fork Creek flows into McDame Creek. I believe this is the largest nugget ever discovered in the entire region. Back in 1977 and 1978 I worked in the Cassiar area as a surveyors assistant. We were up there even in February as I recall as we had to complete the last Veteran Land Act Claim for the Placer Miner who had the Claims at the historic town of Centreville on McDame Creek. There was/is remains of the old townsite. The Chinese community played a large part in mining operations back then and I believe came to work the area again in the 1920s or so.... It is fitting that a Chinese outfit is once again reving this terrific region. I have been perplexed as to why the valuable resources have not been tapped for so long.
