Another project on the drawing board.Another project on the drawing board. Alta Gas is growing with leaps and bounds. Kent Energy Plant Project To help provide a reliable supply of electricity to Albertans, AltaGas is proposing to build and operate the Kent Energy Plant, a 95 MW sweet natural gas-fired power plant in the Cold Lake area. The proposed plant would be built adjacent to AltaGas’ existing Kent Compressor Station site, located approximately 2.25 kilometres southwest of the City of Cold Lake, 15-13-62-03-W4. The Kent Energy Plant is proposed as a peaker plant.
How a peaker plant works Peaker plants provide electricity when the energy market experiences a sudden increase in demand. A sudden increase in demand could be the result of hot weather or if one or more large power generation plants have unexpected or planned operational outages. Peaker plants are then dispatched so that consumers can continue to have uninterrupted electricity.
Consultation We believe in keeping community members informed, listening to their feedback and involving them in our plans.
AltaGas representatives are consulting with local stakeholders and Cold Lake First Nations to:
- Consider input into the energy plant design decisions
- Identify any concerns early and work together to find solutions
- Inform parties about the proposed energy development
- Continue our efforts to maintain good community relations
Construction of the Kent Energy Plant will only commence after consultation has been completed and all regulatory licences have been obtained.
