NokiaRecall that Wi-Lan signed a license with Nokia back in 2006 for all Wi-Lan patents at the time for a lump sum. Analysts have stated that it was a 5 year deal. Nokia's devices and services division was sold to Microsoft last year and the deal closed in April of this year. https://news.microsoft.com/2014/04/25/microsoft-officially-welcomes-the-nokia-devices-and-services-business/ While Wi-Lan did sign Nokia Networks, which sells infrastructure products and services, to a deal in July of this year the devices division (phones & tablets) now owned by Microsoft has not. The license for devices expired three years ago this month. https://www.wi-lan.com/news/news-releases/news-release-details/2014/WiLAN-and-Nokia-Networks-Sign-License-Agreement/default.aspx Microsoft now appears to be rebranding some of Nokia's devices under their own name. It also sells its own tablets under the Surface brand. The fact that Wi-Lan has been going after Apple so aggressively and has not filed suit against (or even mentioned) Microsoft leaves me hopeful that they are in discussions. A license with Microsoft would not only move the stock price nicely but also send a message to Apple that another major player in wireless devices respects Wi-Lan's intellectual property. It would also likely play well with the judges in the 802 patent case appeal. I hope that Wi-Lan is working overtime on signing a deal with Microsoft. If they do I think we would see some of those analyst sell ratings turned to buys.
