Five signs of hope on climate change Positive news overlooked: 2014 has seen significant movement toward renewable energy an excerpt from the overall article which is written by Merran Smith and found on B6 Opinion Vancouver Sun, Wednesday, December 17, 2014 As it happens solar is the first of 5 mentioned :-) (1) Big utilities looking over their shoulders at solar Even five years ago, solar panels were still considered a "boutique" electricity source. That's changed faster than anybody expected as China went all in on its massive clean-energy ,push and began churning out panels like hamburger patties. As a result global equipment costs plunged. The average per watt spot price for solar panels dropped 83 percent in the past five years. That new affordability, combined with enabling policy, is spurring unprecedented surge in installations, particularly in Europe and parts of the United States. According to the US Solar Industries Association, in the first three quarters of 2014, solar delivered 36 percent of America's new power needs--up from 9.6 percent just two years previous. For the first time, home and business owners have a viable and cost competitive alternative to fossil fuel power utilities. Though solar's overall market share remains small, like Blockbuster Video once warily eyed Netflix, big centralized fossil power utilities are taking note of the upstart. in December, Europe's biggest private power utility spun off its fossil fuel assets to focus on renewables, smarter grids, and efficiency. glta
