VIXS ANNOUNCES WORLD'S FIRST SOC WITH HIGH DYNAMIC RANGE AND 4K ULTRA HD 12-BIT COLOR
ViXS Systems Inc. has set another industry performance benchmark for video processing with its new XCode 6800 family of media processing system-on-chip products. The leading companies in film production, broadcast distribution and consumer electronics have indicated that mass adoption of 4K ultra HD requires high dynamic range and 12-bit colour depth. ViXS has responded with the world's first silicon solution supporting those requirements. The XCode 6800 maintains support for current and previous video standards, enabling ViXS's customers to deploy products that will successfully support broadcast content as it evolves from HD to ultra HD to ultra HD 12-bit with HDR.
HDR extends the dynamic range of display brightness levels, creating images with spectacular clarity and brilliance that appear as natural as possible to the human eye. Adding HDR overcomes the limited dynamic range of today's TV sets, giving movie studios thousands of times more possibilities for creating images that are truly lifelike. ViXS worked closely with HDR technology providers to develop an innovative colour tone mapping scheme that converts HDR-based content to regular HD or ultra HD, giving equipment manufacturers the ability to deploy products that will be backward and forward compatible. Moreover, industry consensus is that 12-bit colour more closely represents how the human eye perceives contrast and is being specified by industry bodies as one of the key broadcast codecs for 4K ultra HD. By combining HDR and 12-bit colour, consumers will now get the truly exceptional viewing experience when purchasing ultra HD television sets.
ViXS embedded a powerful ARM Cortex A9 dual-SMP CPU into the XCode 6800, providing ample processing power for today's demanding applications. Also included in the XCode 6800 is a state-of-the-art 3-D graphics engine compliant with OpenGL-ES 2.0 and OpenGL-ES 3.0. With dedicated silicon processing, the XCode 6800 delivers 1080p HD at 30/60/120/240 frames per second and ultra HD 2160p60 at 10-bit or 12-bit colour. ViXS has included a comprehensive set of peripherals including HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.2 and support for HDR signalling, gigabit Ethernet, SDIO, USB, eMMC, SPI flash memory controllers, DDR3/DDR4 memory controllers, PCIe and smart card interfaces. Set-top box versions of the XCode 6800 include advanced conditional access, multiple transport stream inputs, SATA for DVR applications and MoCA 2.0 communications technology. The XCode 6800 family is manufactured in 28nm technology.
"ViXS is the world leader in ultra HD silicon solutions. The new XCode 6800 extends our position by supporting both HDR and 12-bit colour, giving consumers incredibly realistic images," said Sally Daub, president and CEO, ViXS Systems. "We are excited to see our customers bring 6800-based products to market in 2015 and beyond, helping to transform the distribution infrastructure and accelerate mass adoption of ultra HD content."
XCode 6800 samples are available to customers in the second quarter of 2015.
