RE:RE:RE:RE:To transfer or not to transfer. . .You are kidding me I hope Chizz.. Man, better know very clearly what Tax rules are and follow it to the letter of the law.. Don't try to take a short cut of saving $20 in commission..
If you have a paper loss and if you want to transfer those shares to your TFSA or RRSP, contribution in kind, you actually have to call your broker and ask them to do that.. And when you do that, that triggers a paper trail.. Tax Rules say, if you do this and have a paper loss, you cannot claim it on your tax return.. As simple as that..
So if you have a loss, sell the shares while they are still in your cash or margin account and that is your paper trail of buy and sell and you can claim that on your tax return.. If you then decide to contribute cash to your RRSP or TFSA, it is a separate transaction and under the rules of those account.. As simple as that.. Just search cra web site or google.. All of it is laid out clearly..
But now you have clean paper trails.. No argument.. You have followed the rules to the letter.. Last thing you ever want to do is to tangle with Revenue Canada or if you are travelling Customs and Immigration people.. Trust me on this.. :o)
