Let me try it this way.

VLC is a video "app" player.  You can get opensource video apps on sourceforge and github etc etc.

divx is a "codec" and end to end drm solution.  vlc is not that, it is just a player like  roku.

vlc does not develop 4k codecs, or any codecs for that matter.  vlc relies on other companies like divx to produce 4k / codecs.

you are not comparing apples to apples.   one of these things is not like the others!
