True, but the way in which it happened has thoroughly muddied the waters, so to speak. In any case, I wouldn't put much stock in who technically owns the rights to Serra Pelada. The gold is worthless if you can't economically and legally get it out of the ground. The only gold mine left there is the one that lawyers are going to fight over for the next decade or so.

Never mind the alleged looting: The silence from all parties involved on the fate of the mine is telling. Sandstom wrote it off and IMO, SAND investors would be wise to do the same. Most likely when the lawyers are done with Serra Pelada, it will revert to its historical state:
