If the company simply try to temporarly increase the SP value, there is no merit as you said.
If the company is confident that the SP will move upward in the near future, the buyback would be a good investment for the company. They can sell the stock at higher price later to fund any operation expansion later or use it to give stock option to the management. This can be win-win situation.
At this moment, I want the company to show the level of confidence in their operation.
