Re Re stability "The Powers That Be" exist in every society, and it appears to me they have given the nod to the incoming leaders. Compaore never had voter support yet he ruled for 25+ years. His rule was based on western support and his military guard. That military guard mounted a protest 2or so -3 months ago at being ignored by the transitional government. (were the problems at different mines some leverage they used to make their point?) After negotiation they agreed to support the transitional process in exchange for unspecified "employment settlement packages". Since then there have been no other 'incidents'. IMO that was the point at which the "Powers That Be" played their hand and made it clear they would back the transition - especially since the funds for the "settlements" had to come from somewhere. Since that happened 2 months ago, the World bank was well aware - and I am sure got assurances - from the "Powers That Be" regarding the transition.
Now in exchange for some concessions over wages and a relatively low fee to support a heritage fund the government is arranging security for the mines.
I see it as a win-win situation. While I am sure there are other potential problems, I do not see the incoming leadership as an issue. The transitional team has a lot of age and experience. They know the situation and clearly have the support of outside western leadership. I am sure they will work to keep it.
