Birds are far from the only animals that have survived in the Chernobyl exclusion zone. The post-nuclear area is teeming again with wildlife, with animals reclaiming the territory that has been abandoned by humans. Wolves are at the top of the food chain, and they have become a key indicator of the health of the ecosystem: If wolves are doing well, then so must their prey populations.

Some news agencies in the last couple days have reported that people living in the near vicinity of the plant are being evacuated because of an approaching forest fire. I would guess though that after the incident, some people put roots down elsewhere and didn't return because the plant was the main source of employment. The same thing happened in New Orleans after the hurricane. Some people didn't go back.
