County Commission Approves Funding For Security Cameras At All County Schools

Wednesday, May 20, 2015

The County Commission on Wednesday approved security cameras for all of the county schools.

Gary Water, assistant county school superintendent, said the 11 schools that have security cameras will get upgrades. The 66 schools without cameras will be getting them.

School officials believe the cameras will help in cases of potential school violence as well as help curb costly burglaries and vandalism.

The funding comes from $2.2 million in proceeds from the sale of the old Ooltewah Elementary School property.

A resolution that was passed accepted the bids of Shields Electronic Supply and Beacon Technologies for contract unit pricing for Avigilon camera equipment.

The panel also approved several projects for discretionary spending by individual commissioners. Each commissioner gets $100,000 per year to spend as they choose.

They included $30,000 for a playground at East Brainerd Elementary, $30,000 for a digital sign for the South Chattanooga Recreation Center, and $10,481 for the purchase of interactive teaching centers for Chattanooga School for the Liberal Arts.

Patricia McKoy was named to the CARTA Board.

County Auditor Bill McGriff will replace former County Finance Director Louis Wright on the Hamilton County Water and Wastewater Treatment Authority (WWTA).
