Trade Shows
Fall trade show deadlines approaching
The fall may seem to be a long way off, however, the world’s mining exhibitions sell out well in advance. CAMESE holds prime space for Canada Pavilions, however, we are forced to give up unsold booths as show time approaches.
Space will likely no longer be available in the following events after May 30:
- ExpoMina 2014, September 10-12, 2014, Lima, Peru
- Electra Mining Africa 2014, Sept 15-19, 2014, Johannesburg, South Africa
- IMEX 2014, September 23-25, 2014, Las Vegas, U.S.A.
- Seminario Minero Sonora 2014, October 21-24, 2014, Sonora, Mexico
Recent news about two of these events includes the announcement of a strong program of country briefings and business-to-business meetings with major mining companies at Electra, and the comprehensive technical conferences that are expected to draw quality delegates to IMEX.

Prepare for PDAC 2015
Attracting about 30,000 people from some 125 countries, the annual Prospectors and Developers Convention is held in Toronto every March. Attendance is a must for companies catering to the exploration side of the mining industry and more and more firms marketing to the rest of the industry are beginning to see advantage in having a presence at this, the world’s most prestigious annual mining event.
The trade show is sold out every year, usually to previous exhibitors. New exhibitors have to be quick off the mark to secure booths. The PDAC has announced that renewing exhibitors applications will be available on July 10, while new exhibitor application forms will be available on August 28 at 10 am EDT. All un-renewed exhibit space will be assigned to new exhibitors on a first-come, first-served basis. For information about exhibiting in the PDAC trade show, visit: https://www.pdac.ca/convention/exhibit-presentation-opportunities/trade-show.
Hotel rooms in Toronto are another scarcity at the time of the PDAC convention. Virtually nothing within an hour of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre is available as show time approaches. To ensure your accommodations, you should consider participating in the reservation system which will open on Wednesday, June 25 at 11 am EDT. A list of participating hotels will be posted by mid-June at: https://www.pdac.ca/convention/attendee-info/hotels.

Booths are sold out, however if you are interested in attending the event, you should contact UTKI’s Tracey Grindal (e-mail: tracey@btoalberta.com) to find out about a Canadian group that she is organizing. She is prepared to arrange business meetings and possibly provide funding for expenses within the UK.

EDC sees building momentum in the world economy
Twice a year, Export Development Canada produces a Global Export Forecast. Released on April 24, the Spring 2014 edition uses the metaphor of rising spring ‘white water’ to describe what will happen to the global economy. The long-anticipated thaw is happening, and the water levels are rising.
The key indicators are positive and confidence continues to rise, both at consumer and business levels, suggesting that the world is in for a run of growth that we have not experienced in a long time. EDC predicts that: “the US economy will take the lead, rising 3% this year and just under 4% in 2015. The EU will remain in the black and gain strength next year. Developed markets will be the world’s near-term dynamo, lifting planet-wide growth to 3.7% in 2014 and 4.3% in 2015.”
Your copy of the 8-page “Ready for White Water?” May be found at: https://www.edc.ca/EN/Knowledge-Centre/Economic-Analysis-and-Research/Pages/global-export-forecast.aspx?frompage=eDM_WC_GEF_e.

The Ontario budget allocated $1 billion to Ring of Fire
Although the Budget tabled by the government of Ontario on May 2, 2014 is now part of an electoral platform, it is worth noting that it commits up to $1 billion for the infrastructure necessary to make mines out of the mineral deposits in the Ring of Fire area. This is a positive move, long awaited by miners and mining suppliers in Northern Ontario and elsewhere.
However, these funds are contingent on matched investment by the federal government in the context of competing demands for such federal funds across Ontario.
Given the important position of Aboriginal peoples in resource development in the province, another positive aspect of the Budget is the proposal to establish a new Aboriginal Economic Fund of $25 million to ensure that the Ontario government is supporting Aboriginal peoples in identifying economic opportunities such as mining and mining supply.

CAMESE follows government request not to travel to Russia
On May 14, International Trade Minister Ed Fast called on Canadian businesses to refrain from attending events in Russia. The Minister said: “Canada is determined to support Ukraine and will continue to work with our allies and like-minded countries to apply pressure that will further isolate Russia economically and politically, until the Putin regime clearly demonstrates its respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
CAMESE had intended to take a booth at the Ugol Rossi & Mining 2014 which will be held June 3 to 6, 2014 at the Kuzbass Fair Exhibition Centre, Novokuznetsk, Savodsky District, Russia. After conferring with the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development, it was decided that CAMESE should not attend this event.
Followers of the news will be aware that President Putin was in China this week to sign a $400 billion, 30 year deal to supply about half the natural gas consumed by all of Canada. Given Russia’s desire to diversify its energy markets away from Western Europe, one can imagine that the Chinese got a good deal.
Russia is a major supplier of mined commodities. It supplies 41% of the world’s palladium, 25% of diamonds, 14% of uranium, 14% of nickel and 13% of platinum; between 5 and 10% of aluminum, metallurgical coal and silver; and less than 5% of iron ore, bauxite, steel, copper, thermal coal and zinc.
A BMO analyst calculates that, if the West hit Russia with sanctions on mined commodities, China could fully absorb all but palladium, diamonds and aluminum. Imagine the potential disruption in world trade for these commodities if the West continues to force Russia and China to enhance trade with each other.
