The Money's Mushrooms mantra (adopted by many of the okd Vancouver Stock Exchange companies): Keep 'em in the dark and feed 'em manure".

Still the #1 rule in the promotion game.

Money's Mushrooms having money troubles

CBC News Posted: Mar 28, 2001 4:16 AM ET| Last Updated: Mar 28, 2001 4:16 PM ET

Canadian shareholders in B.C.-based Money's Mushrooms are getting all the details of the company's financial crisis.

Money's filed for bankruptcy protection for its U.S. operations last November, after racking up a loss of $77.2 million.

About 100 Fraser Valley mushroom farmers Money's Canadian shareholders are meeting in Surrey on Wednesday to see how they will be affected.

They called the meeting after receiving a letter from the company's chief executive officer that said, "You will no doubt find these financial statements shocking and disturbing."

The CEO goes on to say there are significant losses totalling $77.2 million, mostly from farms in the United States.

The financial statement also shows the company has maxed out its lines of credit.

At about the same time the bankruptcy protection was filed in the U.S., four of its American farms were closed. The company's food products division has also been sold off.

The privately held company has 3,000 employees across North America.
