RE:PETRONAS IS A GO! thanks stockstar
This is what everyone has been waiting for.....
The US$36 billion (RM137.5 billion) liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal project in Canada is expected to commence this September, said British Columbia (BC) Finance Minister Michael de Jong.
"The construction will begin soon... this fall. All other prerequisites have been dealt with," he told a press conference after meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in Putrajaya today.
The minister said he thanked the prime minister for his leadership and vision in positioning Malaysia to play a lead role in the international development of the emerging LNG industry in BC, Canada.
"Our central government environmental certificate is the remaining piece to this and we are working through that exercise. We are optimistic that in the very near future it will be concluded," de Jong said.
The Pacific NorthWest LNG project led by Malaysia's Petronas in north-eastern BC involves the construction of facilities to process and export natural gas to be produced by Progress Energy Canada Ltd.
"Malaysia and Petronas have been instrumental in leading a consortium of companies from China, India, Japan and Brunei in the project.
"This will be Malaysian technology partnering a Canadian company to access resource that we have in abundance to the rest of the world," de Jong said.
He said Pacific NorthWest LNG planned to build the LNG facility on Lelu Island, located in the District of Port Edward on land administered by the Price Rupert Port Authority.
Sharing what transpired during his meeting with Najib, de Jong said he provided an update of steps the BC government had taken to support and advance the LNG project, confirming to the prime minister the passage of BC's
legislation that allowed the ratification of the agreement between Petronas, its international partners, and the BC government.
One of the reasons that the Canadians were very supportive of this project was their understanding that it is a way to replace dirty energy in Canada with clean energy, he said.
He expressed his view that the success of the project would lead to increased investment and bilateral trade between Malaysia and Canada, which amounted to C$3 billion (RM8.8 billion) as of last year.
"The advent of this (LNG) project will immediately elevate Malaysia to number two (as Canada's trading partner) from its current position at number four.
"Because of the leading role Malaysia has taken in respect of the development of LNG here, I am convinced we will see spin-off effects," he said. – Bernama, July 27, 2015.
