For so long, Google Translate has mostly been able to make sense of business and government documents, not much with informal speech or slang. However, that is changing, or at least, improving, and Google believes that much more can be achieved with its translation service.
Translating casual speech

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) says that its translation service is getting better for casual speech, thanks to Translate Community. Through the Community, hundreds of thousands of ordinary users donate their valuable time to make the translation service better, especially for cross-language causal conversations.
The improved Google Translate is able to recognize that a phrase entered into it is conversational so that it returns a more accurate and useful translation. Previously the results were more literal translations, mostly looking outplaced, or embarrassing.

90-language support

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) says that the Translate Community would continue to make the service better. According to Google, its translation service translates more than 100 billion words daily. The service supports 90 languages.

Voice translation

Earlier this year, Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) pushed out Google Translate update for Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iOS and Android platforms. The update was meant to support real-time voice translations on the platforms. Google says that voice translations would also get better as users continue to contribute their ideas.

Getting Google Translate to do more accurate conversational translations would surely draw more people to the service. Many people that use the service to communicate with friends who speak foreign languages would be happy to a service that accurately makes slang translations.

For many people, Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s translation service is already of great importance. People use it in such situations as reading road signs in foreign language or restaurant menu.
Revamping of Google Translate is just an indication of how Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is taking another look at its older services to make the better. Perhaps the company has realized that competitive advantage can also be driven by refreshing popular services like Google Translate.
