As a lightweight metal it is used in the construction of jet fighters (e.g., F16s), helicopters, spacecraft and satellites. According to Metal Bulletin Monthly, the aluminum-beryllium alloy AlBeMet 162 is "
used in over 340 parts on the F-22 fighter."
The AlBeCastprocess meets standard cast aluminum design guidelines and requires minimal design changes. The casting process utilizes the same equipment as aluminum castings, minimizing the need for unique equipment. The only unique features of the AlBeCast operation is the use of vacuum casting rather than the more traditional air melt casting process.
AlBeCast® 910
AlBeCast910 is a ternary beryllium aluminum nickel alloy developed and patented by Materion. It has a relatively high specific modulus, good ductility and reasonably good strength. The addition of nickel reduces the thermal expansion coefficient, increases tensile properties and improves castability.
AlBeCast® 920
AlBeCast 920 alloy is equivalent to AMS 7918. This is an aluminum-beryllium alloy containing silver, cobalt and germanium. The silver and cobalt are added to increase the strength, while germanium is added for improved castability. AlBeCast 920 has a higher specific strength than AlBeCast910; however, AlBeCast 920’s ductility is lower and its cost is higher and more variable.
