If oil stays down they could retire 18M shares for only $7M" Yes, in my opinion "worth the gamble buying shares", i.e. 1.5 billion debt with 7 million on buyback of shares. The upside would be immense if oil "turned the corner" i.e. 80 dollar oil in the next couple of years. I don't think 7 million will sink the company, it will be how long oil prices persist at these low prices. The company seems to be on the right track in the low oil environment.
