The Globe and Mail attempts to identify energy companies with takeover potential in its Thursday, Oct. 8, edition. The Globe's Ian Tam writes in the Number Cruncher column that several factors are leading up to some potential M&A activity in Canada's energy sector.
Mr. Tam says this is a theme Canadian investors would be wise to keep an eye on. Mr. Tam looked for potential takeover targets with the following characteristics: Enterprise value to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization -- a multiple that compares the value of a company, inclusive of debt, against the cash earnings exclusive of non-cash expenses; industry-relative debt-to-equity ratio (for a takeover target, less leverage is more attractive); price-to-book ratio; negative price changes from month end, 12 months ago. (here Mr. Tam favoured stocks that have been hit the hardest, which might be viewed as attractive for potential takeovers).
Mr. Tam only considered energy companies with a market cap of $400-million or more. His potential takeover targets are Bankers Petroleum, Northern Blizzard Resources, Crescent Point Energy, Ensign Energy Services and TORC Oil & Gas
