Tour #1 - University of California-San Diego

  • The morning tour to the 42 MW microgrid at UC San Diego will encompass the various distributed energy resources that enables the campus to self-generate 85% of its electricity on an annual basis with net savings of $10M/year. Highlights will include the 2.5 MW/5 MWH BYD battery, FuelCell Energy’s 2.8 MW directed biogas fuel cell that is integrated with a 350 ton Broad absorption chiller for >66% CHP efficiency, 1.2 million gallon CBI thermal energy storage, ten RWE EV Chargers that are ISO 15118 compliant, the NRG DC Fast Charger Field Demonstration site, the NRG Vehicle to Grid demo site, and the CleanEnergy CNG fueling station that are all co-located at a single site. Additional stops on the 1200 acre campus will include ARPA-E’s energy storage valuation laboratory for the CHARGES program, BMW’s 2nd Life EV battery energy storage (100 kW/ 160 kWh), the Solar Forecasting Research Laboratory, LEED Platinum Student Housing, and the 30 MW CHP facility with 3.8 Million gallon thermal energy storage, that won an EPA Energy Star Award in 2010.

Site Tours will take place from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on October 13, 2015. Busses depart from the San Diego Convention Center at 8:00 a.m.. Site Tours are limited to bus seating capacities.
