Mining Industry in Northwestern Ontario: An Analysis of Recent Developments and the Strategy for Success
This report examines nine mining projects that were active in Northwestern Ontario during the past 10 years in an effort to determine what specific factors contributed to their success or their failure to develop. The analysis suggests that the primary factor limiting mine development in the region is that only relatively high commodity prices would make the projects profitable. The primary reason for this is the high cost of mine construction and operation, caused by a lack of infrastructure, high energy costs, high labour costs. In order to overcome these challenges, we recommend investments in infrastructure, training, and a review of the environmental approval process in order to ensure when resource prices cycle upwards again, the region will be able to ride the wave of high prices to more mine development.
