He is saying to IMO that if you are a good boy now (not standing in the way of SU grabbing COS and hence his getting of Syncrude Board Chairman osition), I will let you stay your role/job if I am the Board Chairman....That is often a tactic to please the old mgt so that they won't stir up a can of worms, but often by the time the new mgt comes in, he will gradually bring in his own "gang" and gradually transition out the "promised to be safe" old mgt... This may be a reason IMO is so silent because they didn't want to antagonise SU (in case they takeover COS) not unless IMO were assured that IMO can step up to takeover instead.
