RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:I have added the following comment to the SH article...enjoyCtblizzard a very good discussion was held on the Agoracom board on Dec 23. A number of deficiencies were revealed but that was very impressive work done by a small group of academics.
The chip is monolithic in terms of passive optical elements. As in all silicon photonic solutions the laser is separate as silicon has is an indirect band gap material that does not lase. Germanium is also used (to improve photo detection) in this chip but it is also an indirect band gap material. No III-V materials which have a direct bandgap and are easy to lase are used for the usual reasons.
When we looked at in detail on Agoracom there were a number of issues that make it leaky. You can look at the discussion that took place in Dec 23 to good idea of some of the issues that were discussed.
