The unemployment rate climbed to 7.2 per cent in January following a loss of 5,700 jobs, Statistics Canada reported on Friday February 5.
Alberta lost 10,000 jobs and its unemployment rate reached 7.4 per cent, the highest level in the last two decades.
The unemployment rate in Calgary and Edmonton climbed from 4.6 per cent and 4.9 per cent respectively in January 2015 to 7.7 per sent and 6.5 per cent respectively in January 2016.
Ontario added 19,800 jobs in January, and this brings the total increase in employment since the recessionary low in June 2009 to 608,300. Ontario’s unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.7 per cent, below the national average.
