Back to the Future
Back to the FutureSearched in my current subfolders, No dice, BUT fret not, there’s plenty of airship info below! No need to dust off the old external drives i.e. old hard drive backups. Some stuff burns itself into the old coconut sometimes (not often but this airship topic left a mark back then).
OK, let’s dial the DeLorean time machine back eleven years to 2005. That’s about the time Sabina Gold & Silver, and other explorers & producers up north were being pitched on the idea of airships - as were the different levels of government. The following wasn’t the very beginning of the mega-airship concept but the mid 2000s were the intriguing early innings for northern airships.
Back in 2005, Abraham Drost, past-President and Director of Sabina Gold and Silver Corporation, now at Lemuria Royalties ( https://lemuriaroyalties.com/about-us/abraham-drost/ ), among others, were involved in looking at the idea of airships for the north. Drost wasn’t the first & he most definitely is not the last as there is a resurgence going on right now.
Here’s an extensive 220-page pdf put together by the University of Manitoba back in 2005. LOTS & LOTS of info in this well done pdf compilation folks:

One of the pioneer Airship companies from back then was and still is Aeros.

2013
Fast-forward 8 years on that 2005 Delorean dial. This is where airships were at in 2013.
First, see page 9 in this next link for a brief overview:

Now, from that 2013 report:
House of Commons, Canada
INNOVATIVE TRANSPORTATION TECHNOLOGIES
Report of the Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities
FEBRUARY 2013
41st PARLIAMENT, 1st SESSION
114 pages
INTRODUCTION
In February 2012, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities (the Committee) commenced a study on innovation in the transportation sector. Committee members wanted to learn about new transportation technologies that are commercially viable and that could address challenges in the Canadian transportation system, such as: emissions reduction, transportation efficiency and safety, congestion in urban areas, and all-season northern supply. The scope of the study included “game changer” technologies (e.g., electric vehicles and airships), as well as technologies that increase the efficiency of existing transportation networks (e.g., intelligent transportation systems, lower carbon fuels, aerodynamic and lightweight vehicle components, etc.).
Some interesting stuff presented throughout. The airship portion begins on document page 37 (pdf page 47 of 114) & is a short 3 pages.
“There is heightened interest in airships because they appear to offer a lower cost alternative for cargo shipments to areas without all-season access by any means other than conventional aircraft or with no access at all.”
... “The theoretical advantages of modern airships over conventional aircraft are that they can carry very large and bulky items, they require very little infrastructure”
... “the prospect of alternative technologies such as heavy-lift airships is also an intriguing possibility for some cargo, such as super-sized mining equipment, for locations that are inaccessible by road or water.”

This is already way too long for a bullboard post. Time to pack the DeLorean in the barn for the night.
