Selecting The Best Cobalt Miner

Selecting The Best Cobalt Miner

The No1 Cobalt miner

Contenders

Tanaka Chemical Corp. (JP:4080), Glencore, Umicore SA (UMI), Sumitomo Heavy Industries (TYO:6302), Sherritt International (OTCPK:SHERF)(TSX), MMC Norilsk Nickel (OTCPK:NILSY, LSX:MNOD), Vale S.A. (NYSE:VALE), Jinchuan Nonferrous Metals Corp., Huayou Cobalt Co., Ltd., Jiangsu Cobalt Nickel Metal Co., Ltd. and Shenzhen Green Eco-manufacture Hi-tech Co., Ltd., Formation Metals Inc. ([[OTCQB:FMETF]], TSX:FCO), Fortune Minerals ([[OTCQX:FTMDF]], TSX:FT), Broken Hill Prospecting [ASX:BPL], and Barra Resources Ltd. [ASX:BAR].

Tanaka, Glencore, Umicore SA, Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Sherritt International, MMC Norilsk Nickel, Vale S.A - these are excluded as not pure play cobalt miners.

Jinchuan Nonferrous Metals Corp., Huayou Cobalt Co., Ltd., Jiangsu Cobalt Nickel Metal Co., Ltd. and Shenzhen Green Eco-manufacture Hi-tech Co., Ltd - These are excluded as not readily accessible for western investors.

Sumitomo Heavy Industries has a 27.5 percent stake in the Ambatovy nickel-cobalt project in Madagascar, along with Sherritt International and Korea Resources Corp. Currently Sumitomo supplies Panasonic, who supplies Tesla. For investors wanting exposure to a current cobalt supplier then Sumitomo can give some exposure only, as it is a long way away from being a pure cobalt producer.

This only leaves investors with the cobalt juniors - Formation Metals, Fortune Minerals, Broken Hill Prospecting, and Barra Resources Ltd.

I will exclude Fortune Minerals for now, as their project is remote and requires proper road access, then financing, before it can go ahead.

You can read more about the cobalt miners here.

The winner is - Formation Metals, Broken Hill Prospecting, Barra Resources

Given this less than ideal situation I would split my investment equally amongst the three with smaller dollar investments in each, as none are producers yet.

I like Formation Metals because of its strong cobalt reserves, its US location in Idaho, and the project is not far from production stage with most of the infrastructure in place. I like BPL for their large cobalt reserves, and their low market cap. Barra Resources also has strong cobalt reserves, as well as nickel, and a low market cap, and is currently making profits.

Formation Metals [TSX:FCO] has risen 113% in the past year, currently has no PE, and a market cap of CAD 30m. FCO stock price is currently CAD 0.33.

Broken Hill Prospecting [ASX:BPL] has risen 41% in the past year, currently has no PE, and a market cap of AUD 11.9m. BPL stock price is currently AUD 0.093.

Barra Resources [ASX:BAR] has risen 633% in the past year, currently has a PE of 194, and a market cap of AUD 25.4m. BAR stock price is currently AUD 0.066.
