The article specifically refers to these accidents originating in their lithium-ion battery packs and the descriptions of the incidents themselves are a close match to the one reported in France yesterday:

This test involves driving a (relatively) large metal object - a nail - thru a cell, puncturing the seperator and allowing direct interatcion between the cathode and anode materials which typically results in instant overheating of the battery cells and fire, but Separion appears to prevent this from happening as opposed to other commonly used seperators.
