- Canadian explorer Simba Energy has announced plans to commence drilling activities in Wajir County later this year as it steps up oil and gas exploration in the block situated in the Anza and Mandera basin.
Simba Energy is among the list of foreign firms who have set base in Kenya to conduct separate drilling works in different parts of the country, including Lamu and Mandera basins. The firm said it is in its final stages of seismic surveys in the northern Kenya town of Wajir.
Simba Energy Chairman Gagan Goel said the firm is anticipating a considerable amount of oil deposits in the area.
“Tests are underway and we are very optimistic of the prospects for Block 2A,” he said in a statement.
The survey is being carried out by AGS Oilfield Services Ltd and it will identify and evaluate areas with hydrocarbon potential in Block 2A.
“The seismic survey aims to identify the most favorable locations for drilling and to estimate depths and volumes for primary and secondary drilling targets,” Goel pointed out.
The testing is expected to cover an area of approximately 535 kilometres with roughly 400 kilometres already cleared.
The firm plans to commence drilling activities later this year and has announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire a new drilling rig.
Simba Energy is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange (v.smb) and has moved to hire an Oman-based company conduct the hydrocarbons survey in its Block 2A in Wajir. It also raised Sh213 million in a private placement for exploration in Kenya.
Simba has oil and gas exploration interests in key areas of Africa with active onshore production sharing contracts in Kenya and Guinea.
Earlier this week the government announced that exploration works by foreign firms has earned Kenya Sh503.2 million as the country prepares to commercialize its crude oil next year.
