Its located along a migratory route for caribou on the main land side of Nunavut where traditional people hunted caribou as one of the primary sources of food. This traditional harvesting persists to this day to a very large degree where caribou is considered a staple and is actually harvested in main land communities and shipped via air to more island remote communities as everybody loves caribou.
Chidliak does not have this problem. Its on government owned land, not inuit owned land and monitoring on the land has seen a total of 9 caribou sicne 2009 AND the Baffin caribou herd is not known to migrate through or calf in that area.
