Thermal Energy is in the process of designing, engineering and supporting Johnson Controls with the implementation of a proprietary FLU-ACE ® Flue Gas Energy Recovery and Low Temperature Hot Water District Heating System for integration with an existing Central Steam Heating and Cogeneration plant for a significant institutional client located in Ontario. The proposed solution is anticipated to recover up to 85% of the waste heat available from combined flue gases emitted from the existing Gas Turbine Cogeneration plant and simultaneously recycle and redistribute the recovered energy through a new low temperature hot water heating circuit. It is expected that the potential energy savings of the FLU-ACE ® solution will exceed $700,000 per year and will generate an attractive return on investment. The comprehensive environmental and energy solution analysis being undertaken by Thermal Energy’s engineering team will involve the preliminary design of the heat recovery system, an operational evaluation of the client’s existing boilers, gas turbine, Central Heating Plant, and relevant district heating and HVAC systems. Thermal will also audit and review existing thermal energy production and heat distribution systems to determine the energy savings achievable as a result of implementing different solution options. Thermal will also determine the capital costs and the corresponding project schedules, perform an economic and financial analysis for the optimum solution option selected and prepare preliminary engineering design including schematic and scale layout drawings.
“This project, developed in concert with Johnson Controls, takes Thermal Energy in to new market territory and has the potential to be a precedent setting model and a new standard for energy efficiency and environment protection in the large institutional target market segment”, stated Thomas Hinke, ChE, P.Eng; President & CEO of Thermal Energy International. The FLU-ACE ® solution is a proprietary combined heat recovery and air pollution control technology. FLU-ACE ® recovers up to 85% of the waste heat contained in hot flue gases, while at the same time, economically reduces emissions of greenhouse gases, acid gases, particulate matter and other air pollutants. FLU-ACE ® is the only combined air pollution control and condensing heat recovery technology on the market today that has been approved by the Ontario Ministry of Environment to replace existing conventional smoke stacks which vent flue gases emitted by natural gas and oil fired boilers directly into the environment. Complete FLU-ACE ® solutions are custom designed to enhance and fully integrate with existing Central Heating Plant steam and hot water district heating systems and combined building heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
FLU-ACE ® solutions have established a 16 year proven track record of success through many Central Heating Plant and Cogeneration installations. All of the installed solutions have achieved the expected performance levels and have proven to be reliable, low maintenance and have met customer expectations. In all cases FLU-ACE ® has delivered energy savings and environmental performance equal to or greater than Thermal Energy’s original forecasts.
