Former Prime Minister N.Altankhuyag announces his 2017 presidential bid

November 11, 2016

The 27th Prime Minister of Mongolia, N.Altankhuyag announced his candidacy for the 2017 presidential election during a press conference at Tuushin Hotel on November 9.

N.Altankhuyag was the leader of the Democratic Party from 2008 until 2014, and served as prime minister from 2012 to 2014. He was ousted by Parliament in November 2014, as Members of Parliament lost confidence in his management of the nation’s economy.

During the press conference, N.Altankhuyag said, “I am officially announcing my candidacy for the position of President of Mongolia. I will work tirelessly to protect the interests of my fellow Mongolians. This is a political decision for me. The Mongolian People’s Party (MPP) has gone back on their promises and has made an effort to consolidate power at every political level.

They are trying to take over anything of value in Mongolia. The democracy we fought to keep for the last 26 years is being threatened. It is time to stop electing these politicians who are merely puppets on a string. As a former prime minister, I cannot sit idly by while the current situation unfolds. It has become impossible to live and work in Mongolia peacefully.”

The past two presidential terms have been won by the Democratic Party, with President Ts.Elbegdorj securing two consecutive terms. In the upcoming election, only the MPP, the Democratic Party, and the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary party will be able to nominate a candidate, as they have seats in Parliament. Candidates will not be officially recognized until early 2017
