The Financial Post reports in its Thursday, Nov. 17, edition that Liquor Stores NA may have an activist investor in its midst. The Post's Jonathan Ratner writes in the Trading Desk column that PointNorth Capital, whose most recent activist project involved Canadian long-term home care provider Extendicare, has disclosed that it owns a nearly 10-per-cent interest in Liquor Stores NA. Under the leadership of John Bitove, Phil Evershed and Barry Goldberg, PointNorth eventually got three of its representatives on Extendicare's board. Liquor Stores NA shares spiked 9 per cent on Tuesday, and Dundee Capital analyst Tal Woolley thinks PointNorth's disclosure could provide some support. Liquor Stores NA operates more than 180 liquor stores in Alberta, over 30 in B.C., and more than 30 in Alaska and Kentucky combined.
