Silicon metal is a key raw material for the production of photovoltaic solar cells, which is currently the most promising renewable energy source. Nowadays, this photovoltaic solar-grade silicon metal has been produced by expensive chemical methods that only allow low production rates. This have been representing a bottleneck for the development of solar energy.
Ferroglobe, as the leader producer or silicon metal, have implemented a project known as Ferrosolarwhich consists of producing photovoltaic solar-grade silicon metal (purity 99.999%) using metallurgical processes and standard-quality silicon metal used for the aluminium and silicon industry as raw material.
This new technology have been developed 100% by the group, after more than five years of investing significant human and financial resources within the framework of two ambitious projects, one in Spain and another one in France. It is reducing the cost of this solar grade silicon as well as dramatically increasing the production capacity.
Now that this production has already started at an industrial scale, and the firsts amounts are being delivered to the larger manufactures of solar cells, the plan is to set up production centres not only in Spain and France, but also throughout all the company’s plants.
