The reason alcohol is taxed heavily, is because it is a demerit good,and in Canada, healthcare is free. I feel cannabis probably is a demerit good due to its dui element and smoking health risks. This would be the reason for the heavy tax and why I feel it is the medical prescription that carries gst.
