The Money Game

The Money GameIf you would like to read an underrated investment classic 'The Money Game' by Adam Smith is worth the effort if you can find a copy.  It portrays the 'go-go' bull market of the sixties.  For some reason the exchanges between Mr. K  and other posters here remind me of this book.

One chapter portrays an older-but-wiser fund manager looking over his trading room.  The reporter observes that the traders in the room all seem to be very young.  The fund manager says 'Yeah, ain't they cute?'

"So why so young?"

"Because an old guy like me is no good in this market.  I've been through too much, crashes, bear markets...anyone can see this market is a bubble.  If I'm trading I make no money because I won't buy this over priced junk.  If I go short I lose my shirt.  But the kids, they ain't got no memory.  This is all new to them.  They have no fear. I turn them loose and make a bundle.  That's why so young."

"But when the market turns...?"

"When the market turns I'll be fine because l'm always reaching out and taking money off the table.  I can't make money in this market--that's the kids' job--but my experience comes in handy when it comes to hanging on to the money they make."

If Mr. K wants to manage his money by taking it off the table at preset share prices of $1.50, $1.75 and $2.00 I say more power to him.  It is his money.  But posting here invites commentary and is fair game.

Mr. K your memory has cost you money.  It prevented you from fully capitalizing on the obvious--zinc is in a rampaging bull market which Trevali is superbly positioned to exploit.  I say 'has cost' and not 'is costing' or 'will cost you...' because shares sold on the way up are worth more now than the price at which you sold them.  A fact.

Moreover your incessant negativity, fuelled by past mistakes you say you have learned from, is undermining your credibility.  I would never put you on ignore--you have useful things to say.  But get a grip.  Contrary to your claim I think you quite like being a naysayer.

Many things could undermine Trevali in 2017 and they are all exterior to it and the zinc bull market. To name just two China's debt is now thirty trillion and America's is twenty.  And these are the two drivers of the world's economy!  The plan seems to be to just keep on muddling through running those deficits and piling up the debts.  This will not end well and like the old fund manager in The Money Game our memories will keep us from maximizing profits now but save our a$$es later--maybe!

Or something else will happen.  The new occupant of the White House is a total loon.  One night he'll have a few scotches and stay up past his bedtime.  Then he'll have a brilliant idea which he will share with the world on Twitter and we will wake up to a massive overseas market crash which will be followed by one on Wall Street.  Count on it.  Zinc will not be spared.

Meanwhile 2017 will be a very interesting year in which some all or none of the above will happen.  I couldn't be happier holding Trevali going forward.  I believe $3 to $5 will be Trevali's q3/q4 trading range.

Read The Money Game.  It's quite funny.
