RE:Trump

RE:Trump
louel wrote: He has now stated he will renegotiate parts of NAFTA.   He is to speak with mexican president by the end of the month.     After that he will then speak with Trudeau.   Last year Mexico had a $58B And Canada a $15 Billion  trade surplus with the USA.  Resulting in the USA being saddled with $73B+  to trade with just 2 countries.   Softwood, oil and auto manufacturing are expected to be in Trumps focus.
As I said before Canada has to aggressively target other markets.  In failure to do already has resulted in Russia securing market share in China at Canada's expense.

Under the Obama administration a review was instigated to put forth recomendations.  Now we wait to see what will happen under Trump.

Best case scenario would be rejuvenation the previous agreement. But that is unlikely I would expect raw logs to be included at the same price Canadian mills pay.  Could be asked for in the deal.     Not having secured alternate markets leaves Canadian producers at a disadvantage.

Another problem is Canada cannot agree within it's self to have one voice in negotiations.  Qubec, Ontario,Manitoba and Sask.  Maintain different rules than BC & AB.  Very weak approach  when it comes to negotiations

News Release: Impact of 30+% Duties on Canadian Lumber Exports to the USA

A Key Wildcard and Timely Topic of Discussion at the May 11 Global Conference The topic of export duties on Canadian lumber exports to the U.S. is now revving up, given the announcement by the US ITC this week. On January 9, 2017, the US International Trade Commission (US ITC) ruled on its Preliminary Determinations

The results of these investigations will trigger market chaos, as Canadian mills will need to try to dramatically increase U.S. lumber prices to counter the effects of punitive export duties. A combined duty of 30+% is now expected and the impact of the duty is expected to cause some Canadian mills to curtail and even close permanently. At the same time, a greater focus on off-shore export markets is expected by Canadian mills to reduce their dependence on the U.S. market – this is expected to cause some disruptions in the Chinese market (as outlined in   Wood Markets 5 year outlook.
