President Trump will use his first budget proposal to push for a $54bn increase in military spending.

Trump’s proposals have a good chance of playing out in his favour: Congress is controlled by fellow Republicans, and his budget has been structured in such a way as to court his opponents in the party. The proposed spending boost is matched by equivalent total cuts to non-defence spending such as the US State Department and foreign aid, meaning conservative factions anxious not to blow up the government’s already huge debt bill will be pacified.
