Yes, core French is mandatory until grade 9, and thats it. That's when everyone quits since its a useless language. Most of the people I know chose a different language from that point on, Spanish usually. I was in French immersion until grade 10 and its the most uselss language ive ever learnt.
I do speak 3 other languages other than French by the way, and found them all useful at one point or another
