As for the volcanic action, gold, apparently, was "swept" along with much lighter minerals through your well-described vents and made( not-so-easily) available to talented people like Stephen Roman and company to be shared with people like us. The relative density of Element 79 easily explains concentrated veins of this special matter, I guess; and it's tendency to seek out the crevasses that also form lakes and such.
