UofT's Vaughn Betz: using computation to help treat cancer
Professor Vaughn Betz with the University of Toronto and his team are using advanced computing to build a very fast and accurate simulator of where light inserted with fiber optic probes travels within a patient's body. The application of this technology can be used to deliver photodynamic therapy (PDT) for cancer treatment. Prof. Betz's team includes researchers at Princess Margaret Hospital, IBM Canada Ltd. and Theralase Technologies Inc.
