I think you're right, the language barrier is simply too high, so Torstar is most probably not interested in Metro Montreal, too. If Torstar wants to invest in traditional papers, it would be better to merge / buy papers in the same city or region (Postmedia newspapers) to unlock significant synergies. As we know, there are some Honderich/Godfrey hurdles at the moment....
Regarding yesterday's trading: It was one 500.000 shares block at the end of trading that changed hands (presumably prearranged). Resembles the block trades in August of last year (Fairfax purchases), but perhaps also another institutional address. According to TSX data, it was a MOC (market-on-close) order, the buying broker was BMO Nesbitt, the selling broker Scotia Capital.
