RE:RE:RE:RE:AIM the company management Really? Air canada only represented 11% of total mile earnings. They have a lot of parters with various retail organisations. Anywone not familiar with the estore i suggest you check it out. You can portal through there and collect miles at a ton of places including Apple, Microsoft, Hudsons Bay, Shop.CA, Well.Ca, indigo, Ebay, etc. All that they will be losing in terns of redemption for people are the base rate fare rewards... Those are the rewards that are " short haul flight for 15000 points, Medium for 25,000" etc. Anyone who has been part of aeroplan knows that if you want to use those flights, you're stuck taking crappy flights with long layovers, and it it sucks. it was the main sticking point for aeroplan. They recently started redemptions at "market fare" which is basically a point to dollar conversion, in which you can book any flight.
I suspect stronly that the market fare purchase will still continue as normal, as Air Canada would be stupid to not accept that (since they get paid regular fare anywyas and they will make money off it). and actually this has the added bonus for people using aeroplan to book on any airline, which is good for everyone. People are freaking out that this is the end of the world for aeroplan, but in reality it's a small shift... 1). you won't be able to earn aeroplan points on flights, and 2) you'll loose the crapy cheap flight rewards that everyone hated anyways. I bet the flight rewards going forward will work much the same as other financial travel cards like avion, amex, aventura, etc, which all purchase at market fare.. only with aeroplan you get the added benefit of double dipping your points with retail partners. With their buying power, they have tons of options, and lots of time to negotiate terms with other partners in terms of rewards. I am not afraid to go long on this, she's way oversold to oblivion, and I will gladly add here. The program isn't going anywhere, it's just changing, and i say for the better as we're no longer tied down with a single airline.
