It took a while but I was finally able to get the full allocation list on the MVIS index which GDXJ will try to replicate over the next week. I am assuming most of the selling will happen on Friday but there should be an increase in volume over the next few days while funds pre-position themselves and the portfolio managers of GDXJ slowly sell and buy into the volatility. I suspect that most of the buying and selling will be on the effective date this Friday if past is prologue.  Recall that in 2014 GDXJ did a similar rebalance that one could look to see what the future will bring.  The week between the announcement date and the effective date proved to be the most volatile period with both the additions and the GDXJ falling after the official changes were announced, then climbing mid-week, and finally going the “right-way” on the effective date (the additions finished up 3.1% while the GDXJ was down 2.6% on December 19, 2014). It seems this time around is playing out similarly with the 20 additions being down 1.75% today and the 52 subtractions all being up around 2.04%.  If past is prologue, we will start to see the deletions underperform towards the end of the week and that should be the time to buy.

 

In total. 20 new additions will be added and there will be no deletions.  However, in order to accommodate the new additions of larger cap names, the target allocation on the smaller pre-existing positions will all be downsized. Using the assets under management by GDXJ as of Friday’s close and looking at the current allocation percentage vs. the target allocation percentage (post rebalance), I calculated the rough amount of shares that should be sold over the next week and which ones would be added.
