The Municipality of Weedon could become a major player in the medicinal cannabis industry.
Two marijuana production companies signed a partnership agreement with the Municipality for a medicinal cannabis production and processing project. MYM Nutraceuticals and CannaCanada, Canadian private companies, are expected to set up in the region and may begin production this fall.
Initially, companies want to build a greenhouse of just over 93,000 square meters, which would produce an annual production of 150,000 kilograms of cannabis. A second component is planned for the project, which will aim to educate the public about medicinal marijuana.
Weedon, for its part, acts as an intermediary between the companies and the owner of the land concerned for the installation of the greenhouse. The Municipality has already signed the purchase option for this 329-acre site, and should then offer it for the completion of the project.
There are still certifications and permits to be obtained, but according to both companies, once marijuana production is well under way, it should be one of the largest medicinal cannabis productions in the world. The project, valued at $ 200 million, would result in the creation of 200 direct jobs and 800 indirect jobs.
A unique partnership
This is the first time, according to the companies, that a municipality is involved in such a project.
The mayor of Weedon, Richard Tanguay, said that he welcomed this agreement between the Municipality and the companies. Weedon's economy has been faltering for a few years, and the arrival of such a large company is welcome news.
For us, if the project goes to term, it will completely change the image of the municipality. It really is a huge economic boost for our community.

According to Richard Tanguay, several projects are on the table because of the arrival of this company in the region.
