RE:RE:wind trubine collapse at shannon
RE:RE:wind trubine collapse at shannonInteresting to see there is very little plastic deformation at the section where final breakage took place. This makes one think of a fatigue failure.
As the VP said: "Like most kind of extreme events, it requires a chain of things to all happen, not just one thing."
So:
1 A crack starting defect in a weld (acceptable, as per spec.)
2 A slight unballance in the rotor, some vibration (acceptable, as per spec.)
3 Causing: slow fatigue crack growth over time at sub critical (design) stresses
4 A bit extra wind, once in a while (acceptable, as per spec.)
5 restbreak and collapse, understandable
Maybe, they'll tell us some day in a far future.
Have fun.
