Platinum Demand - Adoption (or not?) of Hydrogen Fuel CellThe case for platinum demand long term is now questionable to me. According to the World Platinum Investment Council, 37-41% of platinum over the past 5 years has been used in automotive applications. Mostly catalytic converters in exhaust systems. The bullish case calls for even more use of platinum in hydrogen fuel cells. However, some believe the hydrogen fuel cell will not be adopted. They believe it will lose the battle to the re-chargeable batteries for pure electric vehicles. Elon Musk says hydrogen fuel cells are “mind numbingly stupid”. I watched a youtube video last week posted by someone on this board where a South African mining executive was declaring that platinum needs to be promoted to get the message out. Volvo announced 2 weeks ago that they will no longer produce gas combustion engines by 2019. Finally, London England declared 2 weeks ago, that they would ban gas and diesel vehicles by 2040. Thoughts?
