EPS is not a valuable metric to compare to the distribution rate. EPS is an accrual based figure loaded with non-cash items. Management actual does a fairly good job of disclosing Cash Available for Distribution.
TRue also,... however, all earnings should 'come back' to the company in the form of cash received at one time or another in the near future. Frankly, for my own calculations, I estimate the 'CFPS' - Cashflow per Share for the counters I'm following,... and I realized that CFPS performance actually relies heavily on EPS. Without a good EPS, the CFPS will not be able to stand long term.
