RE:RE:What is written online, even anonymously, can hurt you.... Buckshot,

I'm a little confused, what does your reply have to do with my post concerning defamation?  Maybe you can elaborate on the connection between the two.

On another note, if you and or your friends have lost millions, then maybe you should retain legal counsel because there would be no shortage of lawyers willing to take on a multi million dollar case on a contingency fee arrangement, unless of course, you and your friends were responsible for your own losses in which case no lawyer would touch it.

Violence is never a solution.

I thought it would be a good time to remind everyone that it is never a good idea to write derogatory comments about individuals, especially on on line.  You can't hide behind a handle (made up name) because stockhouse would be required to disclose your identtity if you are sued for defamation.

Defamation is communication about a person that tends to hurt the person's reputation. It causes the reader or listener to think less of the person. The communication must be made to other people, not just to the person it's about.

If defamation is spoken, then it is called
slanderIf it is written, it is called libel. It can also be a gesture, which is a type of slander.

Libel is the type of defamation with a permanent record, like a newspaper, a letter, a website posting, an email, a picture, or a radio or TV broadcast.

I would strongly recomment that all posters refrain from defaming anyone unless you want to expose yourself to a potential civil lawsuit.

Remeber, you can still discuss the issues without having to defame someone's character.  If you dont believe me then just google the following story about Brian Burke cyber-libel suit as a reminder anonymous internet commentators can be unmasked.

Burke launched a civil law suit against "ponerman, sir psycho sexy nad 16 other anonymous online commenators who allegedly spread lies over the internet.  What is written online, even anonymously, can come back to bite you.  You never know when you have picked on the wrong person.

Remeber, given the choice, it is always best to take the high road and not even respond to defamation posts. Don't give the posters the attention they are craving.
