B.C. bonuses rebounded thus far this year

Ins Piccinino, assistant deputy minister for B.C.’s ministry of energy, mines and petroleum resources, upstream development division, said bonuses the province collected for petroleum and natural gas dispositions peaked in 2008 at $2.66 billion as companies pursued the Horn River and eventually the Montney. Since then, bonuses have fallen along with commodity prices to as low as $15.2 million in 2016 before rebounding to $158.5 million as of August this year.

Also, what has happened is producers have arrayed a mass — a good chunk of resource — at this particular point in time, and so even if prices got better we would not expect to see $2.6 billion in the near future,” she said, adding a July 2017 parcel went for $77 million, which indicates there is strong, growing interest in B.C.’s energy sector. Further, the province is receiving multiple bids for parcels, which further suggests interest in B.C. natural gas.
