I doubt the angle of an HQ drillhole has anything to do with the proposed pit angle. The geotech's may recommend angles..but that would be their voodoo magic.
The geotech holes were angled toward the kimberlite pipe to double as pierce points for the pipe.
They probably could have been vertical in the country rock if they really wanted to.
It is basically to get an idea on bad, fair, good, great ground at different elevations in the country rock and how that would behave with a pit slope.
To do an open pit...you probably want to run into some good or great ground.
I'm 100% certain that CH-6 will never be a traditional block cave...but some pipes in the world are block caves. In that scenario...you actually want the country rock to not be good or great...but probably fair because you want the country rock to fill in the top of the ore as the cave is mucked from below. If it doesn't cave in with the ore..you end up with big voids and that is a very big safety risk and people have died just because of this. The void collapses and a big air pressure or mud rush happens at accesses near the bottom of the block cave and employees are at high risk.
So...because CH-6 is not going to be a block cave...let's see some good ground in that country rock.
I would be happy with 60 degree pit angles though. That would steepen up the walls considerably.
